B2.2.5. Trends in access to forest resources

B2.2.5. Trends in access to forest resources

● Viet Nam’s Forestry Development Strategy 2021-2030 included several objectives linked to timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs); for example, increasing the value of these exports, and promoting sustainable use of biological resources.

● Based on the statistics announced annually by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the production forest area in the period 2019-2023 increased from 7.8 million ha in 2019 to 7.95 million ha in 2023.[1] More detailed data on production forest area is in Table B2.2.5a.

● According to the 6th National Report to the CBD (2019), in Viet Nam, approximately 25 million people live in or near forests, and derive 20-50% of their income from NTFPs, including hundreds of species of medicinal and latex plants.[2] As of 2020, forest cover reached 14.6 million ha or 42%, including: 2.2 million ha (15% of forest cover) allocated for biodiversity conservation; 4.6 million ha (32%) for environment protection; and 7.8 million ha (53%), for timber and NTFPs production.[3] Trends in forest products in the provinces of the LEAF Program (2019-2022) are detailed in Table B2.2.5b.
