E3.1.5. Management of plantations

E3.1.5. Management of plantations

MARD’s regulations on sustainable forest management[1] are to be followed for interventions related to plantations, reforestation, and restoration.

Plantation area/type:

By the end of 2021, the total production forest area covered 3.667 million ha, with the following distribution of tree species:[2]

  • Acacia species accounted for 60.1% of total production forest area;
  • Eucalyptus species accounted for 9.08%;
  • Pine species accounted for 6.82%;
  • Rubber accounted for 6.02%;
  • Other species accounted for 17.98%.
In 2023, Viet Nam had 5,412,060 ha under the sustainable forest management plan for natural forests and planted forests, and 445,500 ha production forest obtained sustainable forest management certificates.[3]

Plantation management in ER Programs:

One of the activities of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility-Emission Reductions Program (FCPF ERP) focuses on shifting short-term plantation to long term plantations for sawn-logs. From 2018-2019, the intervention area of the project accounted for 19,594 ha, representing an investment of USD 177,898.[4] Environmental related problems namely soil erosion, pesticide use resulting from plantations have also been controlled and managed. Under the FCPF Environmental and Social Management Framework, a simple environmental code of-practice was prepared and implemented under the Forest Sector Modernisation and Coastal Resilience Enhancement Project, which has contributed towards sustainable plantation management among plantation owners in the ERP area.[5]
