C1.1.2. Ethnic minority population in Viet Nam

Viet Nam is a unified nation of 54 different ethnic groups. One ethnic group, the Kinh people, accounts for 85.3% of the total population and the other 53 ethnic minority people account for 14.7% (as of 2019).[1]

Data on ethnic minority populations and distribution across Viet Nam's provinces and metropolitan areas have been published in the Committee of Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA, currently Ministry of Religious and Ethnic Affairs, or MERA) surveys on the socio-economic situation of 53 ethnic minorities in 2015[2] and 2019.,[1] This includes the total number of ethnic minority people as well as the proportion living in identified ‘ethnic minority areas’. Son La province had the highest number of ethnic minority people in 2015 and 2019. See Table C1.1.2 for more detail.
