E3.1.3. Trends in conservation of natural forests and biodiversity

E3.1.3. Trends in conservation of natural forests and biodiversity

Progress on national biodiversity conservation targets:

Ecosystem and biodiversity conservation information is compiled by the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, including through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning report for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050[1] and the Viet Nam Natural Biodiversity Database System (e.g. protected areas data).[2]

Targets have been set out for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy for the period up to 2030. For example, the ratio of the area of natural reserves on land compared to the area of mainland territory will reach 7.7% by 2025 and 9% by 2030.[3] See Table E3.1.3a for more information.

Protected areas and forests in Viet Nam:

  • Most important ecosystems of Viet Nam are located in a system of 203 protected areas with a total area of 2,455,268 ha,[4]including 34 national parks, 61 nature reserves, 21 species and habitat conservation areas, 64 landscape protection areas, and 23 scientific research and experimental forests.[5] A map showing Viet Nam’s protected areas are provided below.
  • Trends in special use forest (SUF) areas in Viet Nam show that the area of SUF in nature reserves was 1,060,958 ha in 2012 and 1,129,726 ha in 2022. Trends in SUFs in Viet Nam are detailed in Table E3.1.3b.
  • Trends in natural forests and other ecosystems: See SIS E2.2.1
  • Trends in forest function areas: Data on trends in forest function areas (e.g. watershed protection forests, coastal protection forests) is compiled through the Forest Resource Management System (FRMS) but is not publicly available.
