E3.1.4. Contribution of REDD+ to conservation of natural forests and biodiversity
National forest strategy and program outcomes related to conservation:
Information on the objectives of various key national forest programs and strategies and how REDD+ contributes to these is provided under SIS A1. Under SIS A2, the SIS provides information on tREDD+ support for objectives of relevant conventions and agreements, including those related to conservation.
Contribution of emission reduction programs to conservation:
Under the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Emission Reductions Program (FCPF ERP)[1]:
- 4 million ha of forest were put under protection over the 6 provinces, with 57% of the budget over 2018-2019 dedicated for Payment for Forest Ecosystem Services (PFES).
- More than 2.2 million ha of existing natural forest with high biodiversity value has been conserved and protected.
- PFES contributed to protecting biodiversity, ecosystems, water sources, and improving the efficiency of the forest management and protection of more than 1.1 million ha of forest. PFES in the 6 provinces of the Program accounted for about 17% of the country's total forest area eligible for PFES.
- Forests owners from the Special Use Forest Management Board (SUFMB), Protected Forest Management Boards (PFMBs), and State Forestry Companies (SFCs) have been trained and provided with technical guidelines to prepare sustainable forest management plans to implement silviculture good practices to protect the environment and maintain ecological services. This included soil erosion control, pesticide management, biodiversity and ecosystem conservation.
- The FCPF ERP explicitly targets biodiversity conservation, and the Program landscape includes five internationally recognised conservation corridors (ranked with a ‘high’ or ‘critical’ global conservation priority) and includes 17 protected areas and 19 important international biodiversity areas.
- In the case of the LEAF Program in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast regions: no data on implementation available yet.
