F2.2.2. Greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals through REDD+

F2.2.2. Greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals through REDD+

Regular reporting on Viet Nam’s REDD+ results and emission reductions and removals in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector is provided through the country’s Biennial Update Reports to the UNFCCC, including REDD+ technical annexes, and in the future through Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) The third Biennial Update Report (BUR3) technical annex details the emission reductions and removals achieved, land use and land cover changes, and changes in the classification of activity areas registered at the national level from 2010 to 2018.[1]

  • Total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions and removals of the agriculture, forestry and land use (AFOLU) sector in 2016 were 44,069.74 kt CO2e, of which, forest land contributed the highest removals at -54,657.78 kt CO2e.[1]
  • Annual average emission reductions and removals from REDD+ activities over the period 2010-2018: emission reductions mainly from reduced forest degradation were 10.997 Mt CO2e CO2e/year; emission removals primarily from forest restoration were 31.021 Mt CO2e /year.[2]
  • For the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Emission Reductions Program (ERP), emission reductions are mainly generated from the protection of natural forests and reduction of forest conversion, deforestation and forest degradation. For the first reporting period of January 2018 to December 2019, the ERP reports a total of 16,217,520 tCO2-e of emission reductions and removals. Removals generated by plantations forest account for about 18% of the total removals (6 Mt CO2e) and the remaining amount is from natural forests.[3]
  • Emissions reductions generated through the LEAF Program will also be reported in the future.
